Every month in the U.S., around 435 students die suddenly from undiagnosed, pre-existing heart abnormalities. That is over 5,000 active and apparently healthy young Americans each year. Unfortunately, one of the first visible signs of this type of condition is death. Young athletes comprise 2 to 3 times the percentage of these particular deaths as compared to their non-active or less active peers. A simple Echocardiography/Echo-Doppler screening that detects about 98%-99% of structural coronary defects, takes 20 minutes or less to perform, and costs as much as a new pair of sneakers could have prevented the death of a loved one. began offering the screening about a year ago after one of their
teenage son's friends suffered sudden cardiac death. So far, he
said, they've paired mostly with local private schools to test about
400 young athletes, several of whom screened positive for a defect."
