Lifestyles at Risk
According to the American Heart Association,
almost 2,500 people die of cardiovascular disease each day in the
United States - an average of one death every 35 seconds.
Unfortunately, one of the first visible symptoms of many heart
defects is often death.
It could happen to anyone, at anytime. Story after
story has been told in the newspapers, television and radio news, as
well as heartbreaking personal stories from friends and neighbors in
our communities. The death of a loved one is a devastating and
tragic occurrence. These deaths continue to occur at a very high
level of incidence because Americans are not screened routinely for
any underlying heart conditions. It is common knowledge that
Echocardiogram/Echo-Doppler testing is not a traditional part of
a general or sports physicals for the typical individual.
Other important facts
-Each month, 250 to 600 young Americans die
suddenly and unexpectedly from cardiac arrhythmia syndromes.
-One person in every 500 has HCM, an excessive thickening of
the heart muscle that can lead to heart rhythm disturbances and
sudden death.
-HCM is the leading cause of sudden unexpected death in those under
age 35.
-HCM is more common in the U.S. than childhood leukemia, cystic
fibrosis, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis.
-HCM
is a genetic condition, meaning affected genes are typically passed
from one generation to the next. Once an individual is identified as
having HCM, other family members should be screened as well.
Screening hearts can save lives.
While a handful of foundations, doctors, and testing facilities are
working hard to get the word out, Americans have not yet come to
fully understand the frequency of these threatening heart defects.
SportsFit USA does fully appreciate SUD in our population,
especially with our younger athletes. We believe every young athlete
should have the opportunity to have a comprehensive screening that
is affordable, efficient, and offers the very best in diagnostic
tools available today.
